Liz Shaw-Stabler, Executive Director of the Center for Lupus Care, Inc was
invited by Bevra H. Hahn, MD, Professor of Medicine and Chief, Division of
Rheumatology at UCLA, to sit on the Expert Panel for the ACR (American College
of Rheumatology) Lupus Nephritis Management Guidelines November 11-12. This task force was made
up of a team of rheumatologists, nephrologists, and pathologists and one patient
representative, Liz. The charge of the Task Force was to score approximately 130
pages of case scenarios that included pregnancy and lupus nephritis, biomarkers,
adjunctive therapies to slow progression of renal disease, general principles of
preparing patients for renal replacement therapies and a review of
histology renal biopsies. After much discussion from the Expert Panel about
particular scenarios, an agreed upon statement was compiled and will be printed
and distributed to all ACR members and other physicians as the preferred way of
treating different causes of end stage renal failure. Liz Shaw-Stabler was the
only non physician but have experienced kidney failure twice with the latter
ending in kidney transplantation. Liz believes that the discussions of her
personal experiences were helpful and all of her comments and suggestions were
taken seriously.
